EV Charger Installation: What Actually Costs What

Everyone asks the same question: how much does it cost to install an EV charger? The answer depends on your house, but here's what you're actually paying for.

The Charger Itself

A solid Level 2 home charger (the kind that charges overnight) runs $400–$800 depending on brand and features. Tesla Wall Connector, Clipper Creek, Eaton—they're all good. This is what you buy; we don't mark it up.

The Installation

This is where costs vary. If your garage is already wired and your electrical panel has capacity, installation is straightforward: $800–$1,200. We run conduit, install the circuit, mount the charger, and test it. One day, done.

If you need a new circuit and your panel has space but no available breaker, add another $300–$500. If your panel is maxed out, you're looking at a panel upgrade first—that's the $1,500–$3,500 we mentioned in our other article.

Distance From Your Panel

Chargers installed far from your electrical panel cost more because we need longer wire runs. A garage 30 feet from the panel costs less than one 80 feet away. We'll give you an exact quote after seeing your setup.

Permits and Inspection

Orange County requires permits for EV charger installation. That's another $150–$300 depending on your city. We handle the paperwork and coordinate inspections—it's included in our quote.

Real Example

Recent install in Irvine: homeowner had a panel with space, garage 25 feet from the house, no existing circuits in that area. Charger cost $600, installation was $950, permits $200. Total: $1,750. Three days from call to charging.
